'Broadchurch' Review

by Lee Padrick, December 19, 2013
Do you really know your family and friends?
Produced by Kudos, and aired on ITV and BBC America, Broadchurch offers a fresh take on the typical whodunit.  Led by incredible performances from David Tennant and Olivia Coleman, this 8-episode series relies on great writing and solid acting to deliver a compelling thriller that takes a familiar genre and offers a fresh, satisfying experience.  This is good television done well.

Created by Chris Chibnall and filmed along the Jurassic Coast of southern England in the fictional small town of Broadchurch, the show follows the investigation of the mysterious death of a young boy.  David Tennant stars as Detective Inspector Alec Hardy, a big-city veteran investigator with a controversial past.  He has recently accepted a job with the local police department to rehab his confidence and lead a slower-paced life.  The job he has accepted is coveted by Detective Sargent Ellie Miller (Olivia Coleman), a Broadchurch native.  Miller has to reluctantly work under the supervision of Hardy and guide him through the investigation in this closely-knit community.

The beauty of the Dorset coast is tempered by the specter of the young boy's death, as family and friends question each other as the inquiry proceeds.  Supported by a great ensemble cast consisting of Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Vicky McClure, David Bradley, and Pauline Quirke, Broadchurch deftly shines a spotlight of suspicion on all these well-developed characters.  None of them are entirely innocent.

Even though this 8-episode miniseries has a definite finale, it is no surprise that BBC America has signed on for a second season, to air in 2014.  And Fox has commissioned a U.S. version of the show, with David Tennant reprising his lead role, to premiere in 2015.

Broadchurch takes a simple whodunit and weaves a complex tale, with twists in just the right places.  This is likely some of the best television you will watch all year.  While there are other mystery thrillers out there to sample, like The Fall, Top of the Lake, The Bridge, and The Killing, none put together as gripping a tale as Broadchurch.  And none have Broadchurch's intensity.

After watching this series, you won't look at your neighbors the same way again.
