'Broadchurch' Review

by Lee Padrick, December 19, 2013
Do you really know your family and friends?
Produced by Kudos, and aired on ITV and BBC America, Broadchurch offers a fresh take on the typical whodunit.  Led by incredible performances from David Tennant and Olivia Coleman, this 8-episode series relies on great writing and solid acting to deliver a compelling thriller that takes a familiar genre and offers a fresh, satisfying experience.  This is good television done well.

'Orphan Black' Review

by Lee Padrick, December 17, 2013
Orphan Black
The first rule of Clone Club is "Never tell anyone about Clone Club."
As television enters the post-Golden Age, there is lots of scripted fare to choose to watch.  Trouble is, some of the best stuff is not on the major networks or the prestige drama networks.  Some of the best stuff is hard to find and watch.  Like Orphan Black.

Masters of Sex - "Manhigh" Review

by Lee Padrick, December 16, 2013
Masters of Sex S1E12
Smoking in the boy's room

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Masters of Sex finishes up a great first season.

Going into the season finale, there were lots of loose ends to address, as well as the need to pave the road for the upcoming second season.  A lot of expectations to meet.  Fortunately, "Manhigh" met most of them and gave us some resolution to most of the situations that have developed over the second half of the season.

Masters of Sex - "Phallic Victories"

by Lee Padrick, December 13, 2013
Masters of Sex S1E11

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

As Masters of Sex hurtles toward the end of the first season, Virginia shows us just how important she is to this world.

Masters of Sex has spent the past ten episodes showing us how vital Bill Masters is to this show.  And Virginia, because of Masters being front and center, has suffered, as her character has slowly developed.  But all of this changed in this penultimate episode.  What we have suspected all along is now universally accepted; Virginia is the glue that holds this show together.

Masters of Sex - "Fallout" Review

by Lee Padrick, December 9, 2013
Masters of Sex S1E10

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Nuclear annihilation is at hand.

This week's episode of Masters of Sex continues the season's arc toward ... something, but it stumbles more so than other recent episodes.  This is not the show's finest moment, but the further development of the secondary cast renders it watchable, and at times, enjoyable.

Masters of Sex - "Involuntary" Review

by Lee Padrick, December 9, 2013
Masters of Sex S1E9

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Performance evaluations are due this week.

Masters of Sex delivers a great episode, as the characters continue to develop into real people, with real successes and failures.  Michael Sheen continues to shine (see what I did there?) as the titular lead and Masters, no matter his past or station in life, still comes across as an asshole.  Sheen plays Master's peculiar nature perfectly, and it is a testament to his portrayal that the viewer, after nine episodes, still does not like him.  This is not a guy you want to have a beer with or take fishing.

The Blacklist S1E10

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Leg wounds are never as bad as they appear.  At least on television.

This week's episode is the second part of "Anslo Garrick," and it also serves as the mid-season finale.  All in all, an exciting hour of The Blacklist.

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Spaghetti Tuesdays on Wednesdays will be cancelled until further notice.

The mid-season finale has come and gone, and fans around the world are all asking the same question today:  "Did a dingo eat the baby?"  This episode both stumbled and shined, and we have to wait a couple of months to see where it all goes from here.

The Blacklist - "Anslo Garrick" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 27, 2013
The Blacklist S1E9

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Lizzy comes to work on her day off and channels her inner badass.

The promos for the latest episode of The Blacklist suggest that the show is stepping up its game.  So I tuned into "a very special Blacklist," expecting an unknown international turkey smuggler being the target.  Because its Thanksgiving.  What I got was much better.

It is fun and cathartic to watch the highest rated new show of the season.  The characters are over-the-top, the plot makes absolutely no sense, and there is a big budget which translates into lots of stuff blowing up.  A great release for those of us who watch prestige drama.

Walking Dead - "Dead Weight" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 25, 2013
Walking Dead S4E7

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

The results are in, and it appears the Governor has been re-elected to a second term.

Scott Gimple, how could you?  You inherited the most popular drama in cable TV history.  A popular drama that, mind you, has faced criticism and accusations of, well, ... just being boring.  You turned the franchise around in the first five episodes, by introducing new characters and developing existing characters into real people, not cartoon characters.  This fantastic fourth season was firing on all cylinders.  So what did you do?  You brought back Cotton-Eyed Joe, made him almost human, then turned him back into a cartoon character.  Within a two hour span.  Two hours that I could have spent watching a rerun of Roadhouse.

Boardwalk Empire - "Farewell Daddy Blues" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 25, 2013
Boardwalk Empire S4E12

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Witness the ebb and flow of organized crime.

Going into the season finale of Boardwalk Empire's fourth season, the viewer knows that someone that is germane to the series is going to die.  The second double-cross of Nucky by his brother Eli suggests that Eli is not long for this world, set in the 1920s.  And Eli does everything in his power to earn a bullet between the eyes.  He has turned on his brother, not once, but twice.  One more time, and we have a Roaring 20's Peter on our hands.

Boardwalk Empire - "Havre de Grace" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 18, 2013
Boardwalk Empire S4E11

Walking Dead - "Live Bait" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 18, 2013
Walking Dead S4E6

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

The Governor is back, and he is participating in no-shave Movember.

This episode of a fine season of The Walking Dead focuses entirely on the Governor (David Morrissey).  Last week, the Governator is seen standing in the shadows outside the prison.  This week, we are treated to a flashback of what happened to the infamous psychopath immediately after his defeat (and mass murder) at the prison last season.

The Blacklist - "General Ludd" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 15, 2013
The Blacklist S1E8

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

This episode's theme is about fatherhood.  Or not.

The opening scene where a father and son are playing in the park as aircraft parts (and bodies!) fall from the sky is terrifying.  Later, we find out that the father and son died as a result of the aircraft bombing by a group of nutcases calling themselves "General Ludd."  The General Ludd group appear to be the illegitimate lovechild of WTO protesters and the Unibomber.  And their main guy, the newly-blond Bradley Holland/Nathaniel Wolf/Arthur Denning (Justin Kirk), a familiar look-a-like, is busy planning more attacks in hopes of bringing down the country's financial system.  Because his daddy was laid off, found comfort in a bottle, and committed suicide.  Sure, why not destroy your country's financial system if a family member develops a substance abuse problem and suffers from depression?  Makes perfect sense.  If you are Carlos the Jackal.

Boardwalk Empire - "White Horse Pike" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 14, 2013
Boardwalk Empire S4E10

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

The endgame of Season 4 is in sight, and all of the various storylines are coalescing.  There is going to be a war in Atlantic City (as there is this time every year).

Narcisse and Chalky want each other dead.  Chalky tries to take out Narcisse at the Universal Negro Improvement Association office, but Narcisse escapes.  Mainly because Chalky did not see the job through, and he gets a shot in the shoulder for his failure.  And Narcisse wants Nucky to trade Chalky for a third of the proceeds of the heroin that Masseria is shipping alongside Nucky's Florida booze.  Nucky plays along with Masseria and Narcisse in an effort to give Chalky some time to get out of town.  But Mayor Bader is no longer on Team Nucky, and sends two police officers to "help Chalky get out of town," which turns into an attempt on Chalky's life.  An attempt that goes badly for the police officers, as Chalky takes them both out, while Daughter gets the car stopped.

Masters of Sex - "All Together Now" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 13, 2013
Masters of Sex S1E7

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

I think Masters of Sex is entering the plateau stage.

This episode of Masters of Sex is possibly the best hour of the young series thus far.  The slow, meandering plot seems to find its course as most of the storylines of the series intersect this episode.  The characters' development is reaching a critical mass where the direction of the show is becoming more clear.

Masters and Virginia have now moved into the study themselves, WITH EACH OTHER!  But its not the romantically-tinged scene you would expect; instead, they are hooked up to wires as they awkwardly perform, as Masters narrates each of the four stages of arousal.  Kinda icky to watch.  Virginia does not orgasm during this first experience, so Masters takes this as license to continue "researching" with Virginia from different positions, so that she can achieve a clitoral orgasm.

Dr. Haas (Nicholas D'Agosto), the slap-happy protege of Masters, is continuing his relationship with Vivian Scully (Rose McIver), the daughter of closeted Provost Scully (Beau Bridges).  Whose neglected wife Margaret (Allison Janney) is busy boning Dr. Langham (Teddy Sears).  Provost Scully is planning an "out of town" trip, which turns out to be an encounter with the male homosexual prostitute that outed him to Masters a few episodes ago.  Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Margaret is giving Dr. Langham free tickets to ride her Ferris wheel.  Provost Scully ends up the victim of some gay-bashing and gets a knife wound for his indiscretion.  When he returns home from his "business trip," Margaret tells him to go to his room (Provost and Margaret have separate bedrooms, that's just plain weird), implying that she has some company in her bedroom.  Provost does as requested, and never inquires about Margaret's activities the next day.

Meanwhile, Virginia has hired Jane (Helene Yorke) as Masters' new secretary.  And she is very good at the job.  Jane's addition of working in close proximity to Masters and Virginia should prove to be fun over the upcoming episodes.

Libby wants to get pregnant again, and she begins working with Dr. Haas without Masters' knowledge, using his frozen sperm.  Ethan gets her to engage Masters in regular sex, so that Masters will not know that any pregnancy likely resulted from insemination.  But Masters is busy servicing Virginia for the sake of science at work, so he and Libby's sexy time at home is suffering (more than usual).  Virginia encourages Masters to engage his wife in some alligator dancing, after a worried Libby asks Virginia to help get Masters home earlier each night so that he will have energy (and desire) to jump rope.

This episode focuses not on sex itself, but the aftermath and effects that sex can have on peoples' lives.  And the show is better for it.  Looking forward to seeing where we go now that Masters and Virginia are spinning the dials together.

Random Thoughts:

- Jane as Masters' secretary should prove to be awesome!

- Dr. Langham did not seem as excited about his older plaything once she started expressing some feelings for him.

- Langham's therapist is none other than Alan Ruck of Ferris Bueller's Day Off!

Masters of Sex - "Brave New World" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 13, 2013
Masters of Sex S1E6

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers!

We're going to Florida!  Is this Boardwalk Empire or Masters of Sex?

Libby (Caitlin Fitzgerald) and Masters decide to take a vacation to Miami, to clear their minds after the loss of their unborn.  Libby is game for some fun in the sun; Masters is more interested in the old couple having sex on the other side of the thin-walled hotel room.  He even gets caught glancing at the clock as Libby tries to get him in the mood for sexy time.  She finally gives up on Masters, and sends him home, so she can enjoy the rest of the week without her uptight husband serving as a buzz kill.

The Blacklist - "Frederick Barnes" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 8, 2013
The Blacklist S1E7

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

The beauty of The Blacklist is that it is a satire of other popular TV dramas.

As Andy Greenwald describes it, television is cannibalizing itself.  In this new era of Walking Dead Miami and Better Call Saul, The Blacklist stands out as a big-budget over-the-top hour of wickedly nonsensical badassery, driven by the riveting performance of James Spader as Raymond Reddington.  As I have mentioned previously, the best way to view the show is to suspend logic until after the credits roll.

Homeland - "Still Positive" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 4, 2013
Homeland S3E6

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

I have no idea what this show is about anymore.

The first season of Homeland was great television.  Suspense, thriller action, spies!  That's the stuff folks love to watch.

But when spies turn mopey, hands are reaching for the remote control.  Carrie is pregnant (likely with Brody's baby) and Saul's wife is stepping out on him.  "We were on a break!"  Only works on Friends.

Walking Dead - "Indifference" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 4, 2013
Walking Dead S4E4

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

He may be a farmer and hunter/gatherer now, but the Ricktator still holds unilateral authority over the band of survivors.

"Indifference" takes a different tact than the previous episodes this season on the Walking Dead.   While the main party of Prison-ers is back at "home" suffering from disease, caring for the inflicted, or just holding watch, this episode focuses on two groups:  1) Darryl, Michonne, Tyrese, and Bob; and 2) Rick and Carol.

Boardwalk Empire - "The Old Ship of Zion" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 2, 2013
Boardwalk Empire S4E8

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Lots of danger comes to Atlantic City.  And not everyone will survive.

This episode delivers that slow burn tension that is the hallmark of Boardwalk Empire.  There are many dangers in this gangster life, and not all of them involve an underling with a gun and a contract.

Boardwalk Empire - "William Wilson" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 2, 2013
Boardwalk Empire S4E7

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

The return of Mellon, Remus, Esther, Means, and Torrio.  That's good Boardwalk Empire.

This episode covered a lot of ground, from Chicago to New York.  Al Capone (Stephen Graham) is trying to provoke a war in Chicago with the cops!  And he wants O'Bannion's head on a stick.  Johnny Torrio (Greg Antonacci) puts a leash on the vengeful Capone and continues to work a deal with O'Bannion.  Torrio buys a brewery from O'Bannion, but as he is closing the deal, the cops show up and arrest everybody.  When Torrio gets out on bail, he orders O'Bannion's demise to a gleeful Capone.  Something tells me that George MuellerAlden (Michael Shannon) will be updating his LinkedIn account soon.

Boardwalk Empire - "The North Star" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 1, 2013
Boardwalk Empire S4E6

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Nucky (Steve Buscemi) is in a different place, and not just geographically.  He is looking for something in Tampa, and it appears he may have found it in Sally Wheet (Patricia Arquette).

He meets with Margaret (Kelly MacDonald) in New York City as he is travelling to Tampa, and the reception he receives from his estranged wife is lukewarm, to be kind.  He leaves her the gift he bought for Teddy's birthday, then continues his journey.

Masters of Sex - "Catherine" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 31, 2013
Masters of Sex S1E5

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Tragedy strikes Masters of Sex, and Masters is powerless to stop it.

Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia (Lizzy Caplan) are moving to the next stage in their research, couples.  Dr. Langham (Teddy Sears) eagerly signs back up, hoping for more research with Jane (Helene Yorke), the young woman who is only interested in a tryst with a married man if its for "scientific research."  But Masters and Virginia are experimenting to see if there is more than just the physical condition during sex; the hard-to-quantify chemistry variable.  So they match Dr. Langham with an unknown partner, and he is unable to perform.  When they rematch him with Jane, he is still unable to perform, offering a comedic subplot to an otherwise dark episode.

Homeland - "The Yoga Play" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 1, 2013
Homeland S3E5

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Homeland delivered the best episode of the season this week.  Trouble is, the bar was set very low.

We continue down the path of the great Saul/Carrie operation.  Carrie (Claire Danes) is in contact with the Iranian bad guy, Javadi, and she requests a face-to-face meeting.  She is being followed by the CIA and the Iranians.  But when the tails disappear, she and Saul are concerned that she has been compromised and the operation will not continue.

Homeland - "Game On" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 31, 2013
Homeland - S1E4

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Here's a life lesson for folks.  If you ever find yourself cornered, just think of where you would rather be.  Then go there.  If it works for Homeland, it will work for you.

This episode's twist is totally unexpected, at least for me.  So Carrie has been working with Saul all along?  And the plan was to get the Iranians to contact Carrie about providing them with sensitive information?  Sure, that makes sense.  Consider that Carrie has risked her life for her job and country multiple times in the past, so naturally she will jump ship and commit treason at the first opportunity that she gets to exact revenge on Saul's harsh treatment of her.  Or not.

The Blacklist - "Gina Zanetakos" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 30, 2013
The Blacklist - S1E6

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

After a strong episode last week, The Blacklist delivers "Gina Zanetakos," an episode as hard to follow as the title is to pronounce.  A lot of stuff happens within the show's 44 minutes and a fair amount of it does not make much sense.

As I've said previously, for me to enjoy The Blacklist, I have to suspend logic and just come along for the entertainment of Spader's acting and the big-budget action scenes.  But this week requires more than a suspension of logic.  It requires thought.  And thought during The Blacklist can make the show much less enjoyable, because most of the plot of The Blacklist does not make sense.

Masters of Sex - "Thank You For Coming" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 29, 2013
Masters of Sex - S1E4

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Remind me not to invite Masters over for dinner.

This fourth episode of Masters of Sex was a strong showing.  The main characters are coming more in focus, as we see what tends to shape them into who they are.  This episode also reminds us that this is the mid-1950's and things that we take for granted are quite shocking, when disclosed, 60 years ago.

Walking Dead - "Isolation" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 28, 2013
Walking Dead, S4E3

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Carol is the new Carl.

The one character that has never been given a compelling story arc is Carol (Melissa McBride).  In Season Four, Carol has not only been developed further as a character, but she has exhibited some good old-fashioned badassery.  Last episode, she was teaching children how to use knives and having two young girls help her put their flu-ridden father down before he turned, even remarking that the inability to put people down after death, in order to prevent expanding the zombie population, is a sign of weakness.

Masters of Sex - "Standard Deviation" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 24, 2013
Masters of Sex, S1E3

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Bill Masters is interested in sex research because he does not understand it.  The flashback with Masters and Scully gave us insight into how and why he is driven to research a taboo subject in the 1950's.

Lots of stuff happening, leading to a scattered episode.  We see an idealistic Bill Masters in the flashbacks, excited about his work and future research opportunities, contrasted with the present-day Masters, who is cynical, burned-out, and frumpy.  The opening scene where a young bride-to-be comes into the office for some discrete advice about birth control reminds us that the 1950's was a stuffy place.  This young woman is embarrassed talking about sex with her betrothed, and the look on her face when Masters shows her to apply a condom is priceless.  Masters explains her alternatives, including a cervical cap, and the young woman asks, "Where's my cervix?"  That's good stuff.

The Blacklist - "The Courier" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 23, 2013
The Blacklist - S1E5

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Ford F-150 versus Jeep Cherokee!

The strength of The Blacklist is size of the budget.  Every week, the show continues to up the ante on its action scenes.

There is a new unknown international badass ghost that is known as the Courier.  The Courier specializes in moving things, often across international borders, for his clients.  His service is expensive, and if the buyer or seller does anything untoward, he executes them both.  And, he happens to be on Reddington's (James Spader) blacklist.

The Blacklist - "The Stewmaker" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 23, 2013
The Blacklist - S1E4

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

OK, by the fourth episode of a new network show, its fate has usually been sealed.  Future episodes are ordered, or the ones already in the can will likely be burned off at 8 PM on fall Saturday nights.

The fourth episode of The Blacklist worked for me, as it moved back to the promise offered by the pilot.  Not coincidentally, this episode (along with the pilot) was directed by Joe Carnahan, and it showed.  Carnahan may not be able to do much about the writing, but he put the "creep" in "creepy" as our latest Villian of the Week was an odd bird indeed.

The Blacklist - "Wuijing" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 22, 2013
The Blacklist - "Wuijing" S1E3

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

OK, James Spader is bringing a world class 'A' game to The Blacklist.  Trouble is, the script cannot keep pace with Spader's acting chops.

At least in this third episode of the show, the FBI is no longer pretending to have Reddington in custody.  So watching the first half of the episode was more enjoyable, considering I didn't have to keep wondering how he comes and goes from custody. You know, since he is a High Value Detainee and all.

Walking Dead - "Infected" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 21, 2013
Walking Dead, "Infected", S4E2

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

There will be no BLT's on The Walking Dead.

There's a prevailing theme on The Walking Dead.  Everyone will die a horrible death, and no one gets out alive and happy.  Sure, there are moments when the characters forget their plight, and smile, but that fleeting happiness is often interrupted by a scream, signalling the return of the threat of death.

Homeland - "Tower of David" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 16, 2013

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Brody's back!  And thing's are not going well for him.

When we last saw Brody (Damian Lewis, the 2012 Best Actor in Drama Emmy winner), he was sneaking into Canada and on the run.  He shows up in this third episode of Season Three and because of a $10 million bounty on his head, he has caught a bullet on the Columbian/Venezuelan border.  He is taken in by local drug lords from Caracas.

The drug lords take him to an unfinished high-rise somewhere in Caracas and his wound is treated by Graham (Erik Dellums), a pedophilic "doctor" that's found a home in the Tower of David, a project that was started by an Evil Banker, but never finished, and is the home of squatters and those folks under the protection of El Nino and his gang.

Homeland - "Uh Oh Ah" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 15, 2013

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Homeland's second episode of the season gives us a good idea of where the writers are taking us this season.  And the destination looks like ... well, nothing we haven't seen before.  Carrie (Claire Danes) is full-blown manic and unmedicated, and she spends the majority of the episode walking around bug-eyed.  Something we've seen in Seasons One and Two.  Carrie is taken into protective custody by police officers as she's sitting down to spill national security secrets to a reporter (who also appears skeptical of anything Carrie tells her).  And Carrie is scheduled for a Commitment Hearing, but she loses it at the beginning of the proceedings.  She is institutionalized and sedated against her will.

Homeland - "Tin Man Is Down" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 15, 2013

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

I apologize for my late, late review of the first few episodes of Homeland.  I'll admit, I've been trying to watch "Tin Man Is Down" for a couple of weeks, and I keep falling asleep.  So I'm not doing a good job of time management, or the writers aren't doing a good job of making me care.

Boardwalk Empire - "All In" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 14, 2013

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

This episode of Boardwalk Empire established the rise of one Meyer Lansky.  We see Agent Knox, Hoover, and the FBI charting the gangs that run criminal enterprises throughout the northeastern portion of the country, and we know historically that Lansky, along with Lucky Luciano, is credited as the founder of organized crime.

Walking Dead - "30 Days Without An Accident" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 14, 2013

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

The Walking Dead premiered its fourth season, and there are a lot of changes.  The show has a new showrunner (third one in four years) in Scott Gimple, and he has brought the show a bunch of new characters.  The prison is now populated with the folks from Woodbury and strays that the Ricktatorship has taken in, and there has been a time jump (at least 30 days, likely longer, since the "Prison-ers" (I'll use this term to affectionately refer to Rick's peops) are now gardening, hunting, and gathering.

The Bridge has wrapped up its initial season and is poised for 2014.  The Big Bad of Season 1 was defeated a few episodes ago, and we've been treated to a few episodes of Season 1.5.  A bonus thrown to the audience for tolerating David Tate?  Perhaps.

Hank (Ted Levine) and Sonya (Diane Kruger) spend some time at Hank's ranch, where he shows off his rodeo skills while Sonya decompresses.  These two characters are fun to watch, and I hope we get more of their backstory next season.  Sonya is concerned that Hank is considering retirement, but he assures her (and us) he will be back next season.

Masters of Sex - "Race To Space" Review

by Lee Padrick, October 8, 2013

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

The second episode of Masters of Sex continues on the path of character development and world building.  We are immersed in 1956, with all the trappings of societal mores during this period in time.  A period where its OK to hit a woman, as long as you're apologetic the next time you see her.  A world where doctors and nurses smoke in the lunchroom of a hospital.  A time when couples sleep in separate twin beds.  A strange world.

Masters of Sex - "Pilot"

by Lee Padrick, October 3, 2013

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers.

Come for the nudity, stay for the drama.

A show about groundbreaking sex research in the 1950's?  Sign me up.  Although, I must admit, even in 2013, I'm concerned that my parents may find this post and read my thoughts about a show entitled Masters of Sex.  Sounds like a title I see in the Pay-Per-View menu on my Tivo, followed by Big Butt Girls in Rio 8.

This new Showtime period drama is unlike anything else I've seen recently.  While most networks are signing up for the latest anti-hero or omnipresent criminal genius drama series, this new show is a breath of fresh air. Other than an obvious Mad Men similarity, primarily because it takes place around the same era, Masters of Sex gives us some new water cooler fare.  In between our ramblings about whether Walter White got his just desserts or the contrived brilliance of Reddington from The Blacklist, we know can openly discuss orgasms and plateaus.  OK, maybe we can't (and shouldn't, in the workplace).
