Walking Dead S4E4
WARNING: This review contains spoilers.
He may be a farmer and hunter/gatherer now, but the Ricktator still holds unilateral authority over the band of survivors.
"Indifference" takes a different tact than the previous episodes this season on the Walking Dead. While the main party of Prison-ers is back at "home" suffering from disease, caring for the inflicted, or just holding watch, this episode focuses on two groups: 1) Darryl, Michonne, Tyrese, and Bob; and 2) Rick and Carol.
Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Carol (Melissa McBride) go on a scavenger hunt for medication and supplies after Rick gives further thought to Carol's dispatching of Karen and David (yes, I had to look his name up, I forgot). Meanwhile, Carol is giving some bad motherly advice to quarantined Lizzy. Just don't call her "Mom." Rick decides to ask Carol to join him on his quest, and Carol agrees. She wants to talk about what she did, but Rick is not willing to discuss what happened. Carol and Rick search a subdivision and find a young girl and guy hiding out in the bathroom of one of the houses. The young couple seem to be harmless, and Rick reluctantly tells them that they can come back to the prison, but warns them that a bad virus is going around. The couple still want to join the Rickster's tribe, and they want to help out in the hunting/gathering for food and medicine. Sadly, the young girl, who has a chronic leg injury, turns into #ZombieChow. The young guy disappears (with Rick's watch that he gave him so the guy would know when they were going to leave).
Carol tells Rick that she has changed from the abused victim that she was pre-Apocalypse. She is no longer willing to play a passive role, that she is now a woman of action and decision. Except that Rick is the judge, jury, and executioner, and he kicks Carol out of the group and leaves her to fend for herself alone. Dude, the tribe has not spoken!
Darryl (Norman Reedus), Michonne (Danai Guirira), Tyrese (Chad Coleman), and Bob (Larry Gilliard) have escaped the #ZombieHerd and have managed to hot-wire a minivan after an encounter with #bushzombies. They get to the veterinary clinic and get the medication and supplies they need, and Bob finds some liquor, which he risks his life to get. Darryl goes all #rednecky and threatens Bob if he takes a drink, and the group heads back to the Prison.
Great writing this episode! This fourth season continues to impress, and to make Walking Dead must-see television. Is there an award for "Most Improved Drama Series?"
Random Thoughts:
- Why didn't Darryl's party just go back out the way they came in to the veterinary clinic?
- For the record, I am OK with Bob having a few drinks. Just lock him in a jail cell and let him tie one on. There are dead people trying to eat you! I would have to have a drink or two on a special occasion. Like surviving until sundown.
- I don't think Herschel will agree with Rick's decision to jettison Carol.
