Masters of Sex - "Brave New World" Review

by Lee Padrick, November 13, 2013
Masters of Sex S1E6

WARNING:  This review contains spoilers!

We're going to Florida!  Is this Boardwalk Empire or Masters of Sex?

Libby (Caitlin Fitzgerald) and Masters decide to take a vacation to Miami, to clear their minds after the loss of their unborn.  Libby is game for some fun in the sun; Masters is more interested in the old couple having sex on the other side of the thin-walled hotel room.  He even gets caught glancing at the clock as Libby tries to get him in the mood for sexy time.  She finally gives up on Masters, and sends him home, so she can enjoy the rest of the week without her uptight husband serving as a buzz kill.

Virginia is back at the shop, running the research show.  She discovers that a subject can orgasm without sexual penetration, and she is excited about this discovery.  Jane helps her discover that there is very little difference between vaginal and clitoral orgasms, and Virginia exclaims the titular "Its a brave new world" as she discovers that a woman can take care of her own business without the appendages of a man present.  When Bill returns and finds out about Virginia's discovery, he promotes her to Research Assistant.  Virginia counters by letting Masters touch her breast as they "research" the non-penetrating orgasm.

The highlight of the episode is Margaret Scully (Allison Janney), who volunteers for the study.  Mrs. Scully, as we know, is married to a closeted Provost Scully, and sexy time happens every leap year or so for her.  She has never experienced an orgasm, and her deficit is the reason she cannot participate in the study, as Masters and Virginia interview her and her lack of sexual experience jointly disqualifies and embarrasses her.  But the recently flaccid Dr. Langham runs into Mrs. Scully and fulfills some Freudian mommy thing as he and the Provost's wife check the back seat of her car for pocket change.  Mrs. Scully now qualifies for the study.

Masters of Sex seems to be finding its footing and figuring out what it wants to be.  The addition of Margaret Scully and Dr. Lillian DePaul (Julianne Nicholson) have helped this show step up its game and make it easily the best new show on television.

Random Thoughts:

- Love Dr. DePaul (Julianne Nicholson, aka Esther Randolph on Boardwalk Empire) on the Masters of Sex team.

- Dr. Langham has found a way to get back in the swing of things.  Who knew his Viagra would be an older woman?

- The old couple in Miami was extremely creepy.

What did you think?
